After an exhaustive six-day investigation, the Visakhapatnam city police have successfully unravelled the mystery surrounding the destructive fire that engulfed more than 40 fishing boats at the fishing harbour on the night of November 19. Two individuals, identified as Vasupalli Nani and his uncle Satyam, both fishermen, are now in custody in connection with the incident.
In a press briefing on Saturday, Police Commissioner A Ravi Shankar disclosed the findings of the investigation. He said that the police scrutinised CCTV footage from the harbour area, revealing that Nani and Satyam, under the influence of alcohol, negligently discarded cigarette butts onto the engine of an adjacent boat. The discarded cigarette butts ignited the nylon nets on the boat, sparking the fire that rapidly spread to nearby vessels.
The police have announced a significant enhancement of security measures at the fishing harbour. Additionally, strict actions will be taken against individuals found consuming liquor in public spaces.
