Former minister Vemula Prashant Reddy has made an emotional appeal to people to question the Congress government for releasing water from Kaleshwaram project into the sea instead of helping farmers irrigate their lands.
Prashant Reddy blamed the Congress leaders for spreading falsehood that the Kaleshwaram project had become destablised when only two pillars of Medigadda barrage sank.
He released water into Lakshmi and Kakatiya canals from Sriramsagar project at Pochampad. Addressing a gathering later, he said that former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao built the Kaleshwaram project at the confluence of Pranahita and Godavari rivers to solve the drinking water and irrigation water facility of Telangana. As part of the Rs 90,000 crore project, a Rs 4000-crore Medigedda barrage was built. When two pillers of the 84 pillers of the barrage sank, the Congress indulged in mud-slinging campaign against the BRS regime then alleging that the whole project was in danger. Moreover, it posed problems to the farmers by not lift-irrigating the water from Kaleshwaram project.
He demanded that the State government to run the lift irrigation projects of Gulpa, Alisagar and fill tanks in Nizamabad, Armoor and Bodhan constituencies and wet the ayacut lands. Otherwise, he threatened to storm these reservoirs leading thousands of farmers and switch on the motors of the LI schemes.
