Taking a significant step towards improving road safety, the Transport Department is gearing up to implement a scientific driving track, emulating the successful model already seen in Chittoor. The initiative aims to revolutionise driver licensing by ensuring thorough knowledge of traffic rules and proficient driving skills for every licence holder.
Inspired by Chittoor’s exemplary driving track, Visakhapatnam’s own version is currently under construction in the Gambhiram area. Boasting advanced features like communication systems, CC cameras, and sensor-equipped roads, the track is almost complete with ongoing road repair works nearing their end. The goal is to equip every driver with essential knowledge and practical skills before granting them the licence to navigate the roads.
The driving test on this sophisticated track will employ a high-tech sensor system linked to computer software. Drivers must navigate the course without triggering the sensors, with any missteps like collisions, improper turns, or crossing the finish line deemed test failures. Despite its apparent simplicity, the track tests drivers’ abilities with simulated road features like inclines, speed breakers, and traffic signals for both directions.
Transport officials highlight the elimination of human bias as a key benefit of this new system. Examiners cannot provide any assistance during the test, eliminating potential unfair influence. Furthermore, the entire process will be monitored online, with video footage readily available for candidates who wish to review their performance. Recognizing the initial challenges this might pose for new drivers, officials have planned pre-emptive education initiatives to familiarize them with the new policy before its full implementation.
This sensor-based system not only sets a higher standard for driver licensing, but also empowers authorities to assess skills of even unlicensed drivers, pinpointing areas for improvement. G C Rajaratnam, Deputy Transport Commissioner of Visakhapatnam, confirmed that 85 per cent of the track’s construction is complete. He also assured swift completion of the remaining work upon budget approval, paving the way for a new era of driver licensing focused on thorough education, practical skills assessment, and ultimately, safer roads for all.
