Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission Chairperson Vasireddy Padma has strongly condemned the objectionable posts against women on social media. Henceforth, every Friday will be observed as Women’s Self-Respect Day and awareness programmes will be held in this regard, she said.

On Wednesday, a seminar was organised in Vijayawada by the AP Women’s Commission on the topic ‘Abuse of Women on Social Media Platforms – Suggestions and Recommendations’. Chairperson Vasireddy Padma, who presided over the seminar, said that the situation regarding the social media in the State was worse than that of the Stone Age. “It is bad that women are posting obscene posts on women and a section of people are encouraging them for political reasons,” she pointed out.

She said that those who humiliate women by posting morphing photos should be punished and there was a need for everyone to condemn such acts. “Women can approach the police through Disha, Cyber Mitra and other apps to get help in case of harassment on social media. The time has come to fight together against such incidents. There will be good results only when you complain boldly,” she said, and added that while the State government provided 50 percent reservation for women in politics and all opportunities, it was sad that some women were posting obscene posts on women.

She said that the main purpose of this seminar was to warn that everyone who posted obscene messages against women would be punished severely from now onwards.

Vijayawada City Mayor Rayana Bhagyalakshmi, Child Rights Chairperson Apparao, Reshimunnisha Begum, Vijayawada DCP Ajitha, Vijayawada Deputy Mayors Sreesailaja Reddy, Bellam Durga, retired IAS officer Usha Kumari, Acharya Nagarjuna University Registrar Karuna, Keerthi, Rajyalakshmi, SERP Director Vijaya Kumari, Dr Sharada, journalists and others were present.
