Shiva Kandukuri has been gradually establishing himself in the business. His next film, Bhoothaddam Bhaskar Narayana, an investigative thriller with Rashi Singh in the lead role, is all set for a banging release. Positive anticipation has been building for the movie ever since the first look posters were released.
In an exclusive interview with The Pioneer, the film’s leading actor spills the beans for us, and says, “I have always been drawn to crime-thrillers, so I am not unfamiliar with the genre. I’m usually drawn to investigative plots, and the script for my next Telugu movie is no exception! Chantabbai, a movie starring Chiranjeevi, developed alongside me. Perhaps, the inspiration!”
Shiva is a self-proclaimed detective with an eye condition in the movie, and his unconventional attitude makes us wonder what drove him to the characterisation. “OTT has exposed us to crime thrillers in all formats, a lot of which has already been explored in multiple languages,” he responds with similar excitement. He further shares, “Thus, it was a deliberate choice to change the story! The unconscious assumption that someone with a keen eye is what comes to mind when someone refers to a ‘detective’ is where we insert our twist. We created a humorous local character that is dressed in a lungi and lives in the town with an eyesight problem.”
Even the trailer does a great job of showcasing his look, on-screen charisma, and vulnerable nature. Choosi Choodangaane fame continues, “Since my director was born and raised in the Ananthpur region, he was also greatly influenced by it. However, he was quite keen to demonstrate his appropriate understanding of ‘puranas’ in detail. ‘Drishti Bommai’ is a significant mythical aspect that he has included in the movie. Despite being utilised in every home, no one is aware of its original source. Bravo for his fictionalisation, as our movie’s entire plot revolves around it.”
The main plot of the movie revolves around how a novice detective resolves a problem. The trailer teases how Shiva solves this sinister puzzle and finds the people responsible. “Certain aspects of the characters are based on people my director had met in his village. We therefore conducted a lengthy 20-day workshop, and the film translated so effectively onto screen that, when I watched the scenes, even I was unable to identify myself. The funny thing about the sets was that we were all using magnifying glasses everywhere. I remember that the first day of shooting was scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m., but none of us could get started until about 8:30 a.m. because we were all experimenting with that prop (he laughs aloud).”
Broadly speaking, Gamanam fame reveals all, stating, “I studied energy engineering overseas and after that spent almost three years working as an energy analyst in Philadelphia. Since my dad is a producer, as everyone knows, I was always captivated by his script narrations when I was younger. I guess that’s when I first developed an interest in movies, watching my father’s stories come to life on that 70mm screen. Given that I was given my first opportunity far more easily than others, I really can’t argue against it.”
“I am very conscious about this from the time my debut film was released, I am not taking this industry for granted,” he said, continuing to discuss his acceptance of coming from a cinematic lineage and how he is navigating after his breakthrough opportunity. “My goal with every movie is to improve. And without a doubt, I can notice improvements in myself.”
