Where there is skill, there is a way, IT job aspirants told

Debashish Ghosh, senior vice-president and HR Head, Berkadia Group, stated that information technology job aspirants are currently reading the wrong side of the news of how many employees in IT are being laid off, during a panel session at Fire Chat in HR conclave that was organised by Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology in partnership with WOW HR, a non-profit organisation on Saturday.
He said, “Regarding layoffs, the number is a small fraction of those retained. The good news is that the balance, a large portion of employees, are not laid off.  Unfortunately, that news is not highlighted. While some are laid off, there are many retained. That is the positive part of it. They are retained because of their skills. So, the good adage ‘where there is a will, there is a way’ is now modified as ‘where there is a skill, there is a way” to the 300-plus packed engineering and management students in the hall.
He also stated, “We cannot deny the fact that quite a lot of companies are going on a hiring spree to keep up with the ever-evolving demands of new technologies. It is important to understand the market trends and determine which IT roles can promise job security amid the ongoing layoffs. The aspirants need to understand as the economic climate changes, some jobs are created and others become redundant. “So how can you protect yourself from being laid off?  The answer is simple- upskill yourself.”
The inaugural function was followed by a fireside chat on the Future of work in engineering.  It was moderated by M Venkata Chalapathy, Senior Director & HR Head, HR Virtusa. He said, “Recessions are part of the industry’s journey. Recession, as you know, is a period of temporary economic decline when trade and industrial activity are reduced.
It is a trend that happens every two years. Fittest survive in such a scenario and you should be recession-proof. You do not worry much about it. The best way to navigate such a scenario is to prepare and get the right exposure.”
