In a tragic incident, a 25-year-old woman committed suicide at Navipet in the district on Sunday after her lover rejected her marriage proposal.
According to police, the woman, identified as Harini and a youth, named Akhtar, had been madly in love for seven years. They had been seeing each other for seven years.
Harini proposed to her boyfriend for marriage. But Akhtar refused to marry her. It led to the woman being depressed and she decided to commit suicide. She committed suicide by hanging from ceiling fan on Sunday.
Based on the complaint by Harini’s father, the police registered a case and investigation is on. It is to be seen whether the police arrest Aktar on the charge of abetment to commit suicide.
A pall of gloom descended on Navipet after the woman committed suicide. The elders expressed the view that cheating of girls in the name of love and marriage has become a norm. They demanded severe punishment for the culprits.
