District Collector P Uday Kumar has called upon the youth to derive inspiration from Major Dhyan Chand, hockey wizard, and excel in sports besides academics.
He was paying floral tributes to Dhyan Chand in connection with his 118th birth anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, the district sports department celebrated the sports day at the local Junior College grounds.
Uday Kumar was the chief guest at the meeting.
Addressing the students, he said that a student securing 100% marks in academics need not be successful in life. However, an expert in a subject can excel in life too. People with perseverance would take failure as a challenge and fight to achieve success. Sportspersons would continue to fight and succeed.
Sports Day is celebrated at the village level and those who excel at the grassroots level have been sent to take part in sporting events to be held at district and state level.
Expressing concern over many people contracting diseases for want of physical workout, the Collector wanted students to work out daily and take part in the games of their choice. Later, he distributed prizes among winners of various sports and games events. RDO Venkat Reddy, taking advantage ofthe occasion, sensitised the students on significance of right to vote and the need to register as voters. He called for giving publicity so that those who are 18 years and over register as voters.
He exhorted one all to do minimum work out.
Nodal officer Rammohan Rao sensitised the gathering on the need to register as voters.
Youth and sports officer Sitaram, Intermediate Board nodal officer Venkata Ramana, college principal, PETs, students and others took part.
