Chief Secretary and Special Chief Secretary for Energy, K. Vijayanand, on Friday, said that APGENCO and APPDCL together achieved a 14% growth in energy generation during the financial year 2024–25. Thermal generation rose by 9%, while hydel and solar sources contributed 4,576 million units (MU). As of 28 May 2025, total energy generation in the current financial year stood at 6,393 MU.

He was speaking at a review meeting with officials of APGENCO at the CS Camp Office in Vijayawada, where the status of key thermal, hydel and pumped storage power (PSP) projects was discussed. The Chief Secretary directed officials to set monthly generation targets in line with grid demand and annual overhaul schedules. “Close monitoring and coordinated efforts are essential to meet these targets and ensure uninterrupted power supply,” he said.

Vijayanand emphasised the importance of timely project execution and expedited interdepartmental coordination, including the acquisition of statutory and environmental clearances, to meet the increasing demand for power. He said monthly reviews would be held to assess the progress of all ongoing projects.

The 1,350 MW Upper Sileru Pumped Storage Project has been awarded, and officials were asked to initiate arrangements for the foundation stone ceremony by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar. Progress was also reported on PSPs at Kamalapadu, Yaganti, Rajupalem, Aravetipalli, Gadikota and Deenepalli, which are in different stages of DPR and feasibility studies.

On thermal power projects, Vijayanand said the ash evacuation system at Dr Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS Stage V – 1×800 MW) is operational, while the mill reject system is expected to be commissioned by mid-June 2025.

At the Dr MVR Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant (Stage IV – 1×600 MW), construction of the crusher house and conveyor system is under way and is targeted for completion by December 2025.

He further noted that civil and electro-mechanical works are progressing at the 960 MW Polavaram Hydroelectric Project, which is scheduled for commissioning by January 2027. The 230 MW expansion at Lower Sileru Powerhouse has achieved 78% physical progress and is expected to be commissioned by 31 March 2026.
