Superintendent of police Malika Garg said that 14 persons were sent to jail for drunk driving in Prakasam district and warned stringent action of motorists caught driving vehicles in an inebriated state.
Following the orders of the SP the police officials are taking strict action against those who drive vehicles under the influence of alcohol across the district every day.
Drunk and driving cases are being registered in all the police stations of the district with the aim of preventing accidents by conducting regular breathalyser tests. Those caught in drunken driving tests are produced before Courts and get them sentenced to imprisonment and fine.
As part of that, 8 persons who were caught during drunken driving checks within the limits of Markapuram Rural PS were produced before the Court of Principal Junior Civil Judge, Markapuram on December 17 and six of them were sentenced to imprisonment for one week and a fine of Rs 2000, two were sentenced to imprisonment for ten days along with a fine of Rs 2000 and sent to Markapuram Sub Jail.
Similarly, the Ongole Court imposed a one-day jail sentence to 6 persons and a fine of Rs.2,83,000 on 121 persons who were caught during drunken driving checks under the Ongole Traffic Police.
The District SP said that “No Accident Day” drive is already being organized on every Saturday in all police station limits in the district to prevent accidents, sign/caution boards, radium paintings/sticking, speed breakers and other intervention have been set up at black spots, accident prone areas, explaining the hazards of no helmet, no seat belt, over speeding, triple riding, overloading and drunken & driving to motorists along with creating extensive awareness on road safety standards and traffic rules through innovative activities.
The SP stated that the police conduct frequent drunk and drive tests every day to prevent accidents due to drunkenness on the national and state highways of the district.
The SP reminded that many people suffer accidents due to drunken driving and its effect is drastic on their families who depend on them. The SP warned people not to drive vehicles under the influence of alcohol/intoxication, and if anyone caught in drunken driving, cases would be registered against them and they would be brought to court for punishment.
The SP also warned of necessary action for temporary cancellation of driving license for up to three months and suggested people don’t demean their dignity by going behind the bars after being caught in drunken driving.
