Seventeen persons were killed in rain-related incidents in Telangana.
Eight persons were swept away in the Jampannavagu stream in Mulugu district. Three deaths were reported from Hanamkonda, one from Jayashankar Bhupalapally district and three from Khammam district.
Eight persons were swept away by the waters of the Jampannavagu stream near Medaram village in Tadvai mandal on Friday. Those swept away in the flood waters hailed from Kondai village in Eturunagaram mandal. Four of them belonged to the same family.
The government deployed a helicopter to help the district administration in rescue and relief operations. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are searching for missing persons in the agency area. The district administration has taken precautionary measures by evacuating people to relief camps at several places.
The Jampannavagu is still flowing above the danger mark in Eturnagaram mandal. The bridge on the rivulet was washed away. Flood waters entered Dodla village. NDTF personnel evacuated people from the village to an ashram school in Chinna Boyanpally.
Congress MLA Seethakka, who took part in relief operations, demanded that the State government should pay Rs 20 lakh each as compensation to the families of those who died and Rs 5 lakh each to those who were rendered homeless.
She accused the government of failing to help people living in low-lying areas although torrential rains have been lashing the district for the last 10 days. Meanwhile, the district administration swung into action and set up medical camps.
The Minister for Women and Child Welfare, Satyavathi Rathod, who is supervising relief and rehabilitation in the district, announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs 25,000 as immediate relief for those who suffered losses.
