In an exclusive conversation with The Pioneer, Abhay Verma—who is now slaying the internet with his charisma following his role in Munjya—shares his thoughts about playing the character and how the movie is a completely other ball-game.

Part of Maddock Films’ horror-verse, the horror comedy Munjya has caused quite a stir at the box office.  Despite having a small cast of well-known actors, the film has done well during its two weeks on the weekend circuit. It’s noteworthy to note that, in addition to hurting Kartik Aaryan’s film Chandu Champion’s box office performance, it also managed to outpace its collection this week.
At that point, we managed to secure an exclusive interview with the main actor, Abhay Verma, who is getting positive reviews from both critics and the public! To start, the recently renowned actor states, “In Munjya, my character was incredibly honest and likewise generous! He lacked any filters as well. It was really challenging for me to play the role because of these three characteristics. Since I don’t believe we encounter individuals like this! I therefore unlearned all the filters I hold in my personal life in order to prepare for the part, rather than learning anything. I was instructed to make sure the audiences connected with every action I made in Munjya. It was truly becoming challenging for me.” The Marzi fame doesn’t end there: “Knowing the fascinating aspects of being a hairstylist in Munjya was something truly fascinating. I am quite capable in cutting hair! After that, I discovered Marathi, along with its cultures and customs, which I would have known otherwise.”
Munjya’s co-producer is director Amar Kaushik, who started the horror comedy trend with the entertaining film Stree. He and Dinesh Vijan made the decision to support the movie because they were drawn in by the novel idea of the Marathi folktale. “The cast of Munjya was inseparable during filming. We have been filming this movie for a year and a half. We can all reach each other with simply a phone call! We are so close that we usually tell one other about anything that occurs in our individual lives first.” Furthermore, “The characters we see on screen and the ones that are produced through CGI are two separate characters because the movie is CGI driven. Even though I received payment for one (he laughed heartily), I was instructed to use extreme caution so that the audience wouldn’t perceive my role as implausible. However, it’s in a favourable light! For me, personally, Munjya’s accomplishment is a huge victory. I grin at it.”
Even if the movie’s concept is unusual in Bollywood, as we can see, it touched miraculous numbers! Little Things fame attested to this by saying, “I found the folklore it’s based on to be very interesting because I knew nothing about marathi! I now sense that the Maharashtrians are a little closer to me. Whatever else I discovered from the folklore was, aside from that, enlightening.”
“Normally action sequences are more difficult to shoot for an actor, but working with Munjya was a whole different ballgame,” he continues. “I found it easier to shoot them! I had to make my CGI character appear really unnatural on television, which made it hard for me to react to it. I went crazy as soon as I realised that I had to do every short three times with the CGI character! Consistency was incredibly hard to come by. The entire scene may have been completely different with just one motion.”
Abhay Verma is overjoyed to hear that his film has become a true hit! He even told us, “I was blown away when people began to relate to me through Daniel Radcliffe. I thought I was a role model in the fantasy world. I was informed that the film business had never done anything like this. Undoubtedly, CGI characters have been created, but not to this extent! I am a trailblazer; I sparked a trend. Being likened to Mowgli and Harry Potter makes me very happy.”
In the end, the narrative favoured the lead character. Audiences discovered fresh voices and new stories! “We didn’t only violate the rules by using VFX but an ensemble cast devoid of A-list actors. My confidence was greatly boosted by the box office triumph! The notion that a successful movie at the box office requires superstars was defied by Munjya’s ensemble. Not that box office numbers are very important to me; rather, I care about the affection of the audience.”
Since the story and the setting are similar to “home,” the intensely personal always finds resonance and becomes universal. “I was raised in a small town and have always aspired to be successful in the movie business. My accomplishment, in my opinion, will serve as a spur for those who are interested in entering this field.”
