Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced the naming of the government Nature Cure Hospital in the city after the former Chief Minister of United Andhra Pradesh, K. Rosaiah, as the Nature Cure Hospital is very near to Rosaiah’s house.
The CM said that he would write a letter to Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar to name the newly inaugurated railway terminal at Cherlapally in the city after Potti Sriramulu.
However, amid protests by BJP Members, the Assembly passed a Bill on Monday renaming the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University here as the Suravaram Pratap Reddy Telugu University.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said replacing the name does not mean disrespecting Potti Sriramulu, whose 58-day fast led to the creation of United Andhra Pradesh State from the then Madras State in 1953.
After the formation of Telangana in 2014, the names of several universities have been changed while they continued with the same names in Andhra Pradesh. The renamed universities were named after Telangana luminaries in the new state, he said.
He said the existence of institutions with the same names in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh would lead to confusion.
Without taking any names, the CM said some leaders are trying to create misconceptions among certain sections of the public over the changing of the name of the Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, he said.
He took exception to caste being invoked regarding the changing of the name of
the Telugu University. The CM said he would write a letter to Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar to name the new railway terminal at Cherlapally in the city after Potti Sriramulu.
BJP member Dhanpal Suryanarayana condemned the changing the name of Potti Sriramulu and sought withdrawal of the move. He suggested naming Osmania University after Suravaram Pratap Reddy as OU was a hub of the Telangana statehood agitation.
He recalled that Potti Sriramulu was a great freedom fighter and a staunch follower of Gandhi. He also hailed the contributions of Suravaram Pratap Reddy, a freedom fighter and historian from Telangana.
Suryanarayana said the change of name is not only an insult to Telugus, but also to the Vyshya community both in Telangana and AP. Sriramulu belonged to the Vyshya community.
Taking exception to the comments of BJP Members to rename OU, AIMIM Member Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala said the Nizam was the first Raj Pramukh of United Andhra Pradesh. Although the Nizam was the Raj Pramukh, some people have ‘pain’ over his name, he said.
Objecting to certain comments of Balala, BJP floor leader A. Maheshwar Reddy demanded that Balala withdraw his remarks and apologise.
Speaker G. Prasad Kumar said records would be examined and an appropriate decision would be taken. Later, the Bill was passed by the House.
