His appointment follows the recent reshuffle of IAS officers carried out by the Telangana government, during which Karnan was posted as GHMC Commissioner, replacing outgoing Commissioner K Ilambarithi. The official handover of responsibilities took place on Tuesday, with Ilambarithi formally transferring charge to Karnan.

Prior to this role, Karnan, IAS officer of 2012 batch served as the Director of the State Health and Family Welfare Department, CEO of Arogyasri HealthCare Trust and Commissioner of Food Safety Department. He is relieved from the two posts and the orders of the Commissioner of Food Safety yet to be released by the Chief Secretary.

K Ilambarithi, who served as GHMC Commissioner until now, initiated several urban development and civic improvement projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure and enhancing citizen services. He has now been transferred as Secretary to MA&UD under the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).

On the occasion, GHMC officials and staff extended their greetings and best wishes to both the incoming and outgoing Commissioners.
