Erectile Dysfunction

Must read

An epidemic hurting the younger generations

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a sexual disorder that affects a significant portion of the male population. In recent years, it has become an increasingly prevalent problem among the younger generation. This trend is worrying, as it indicates that ED is becoming an epidemic that is hurting the younger generation in multiple ways.

The most obvious effect of ED is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection during sexual activity. This can be a significant source of frustration and embarrassment for men, and it can lead to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and depression. In addition to these emotional effects, ED can also have a negative impact on relationships and marriages. Men with ED may avoid sexual intimacy, which can lead to distance and emotional disconnection from their partners.

Another way that ED is hurting the younger generation is by limiting their ability to start and maintain healthy relationships. Men with ED may be too self-conscious or embarrassed to pursue romantic relationships, which can lead to isolation and loneliness. Additionally, ED can also cause men to avoid sexual activity altogether, which can limit their ability to form close emotional bonds with others.

Dr. Chirag Bhandari, Founder of Institute of Andrology and Sexual Health shared, “The trend of ED among the younger generation is also concerning because it is often a symptom of underlying health problems. ED is often caused by conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, which can have serious long-term health consequences if left untreated. Furthermore, ED is also linked to lifestyle factors such as obesity, poor diet, and lack of exercise, which can increase the risk of developing these conditions.”

In addition to the physical and emotional effects of ED, it can also have a significant impact on a man’s career and financial stability. Men with ED may experience decreased productivity at work and may be less likely to advance in their careers, which can lead to financial difficulties.

It’s also important to note that there are many effective treatments available for ED, including medications, counseling, and lifestyle changes. With the right treatment, men can overcome ED and regain their sexual function, which can improve their overall quality of life.

In fact, getting treatment for erectile dysfunction is a common reason young men visit their doctor. Men with erectile dysfunction often have diabetes, heart disease, or are obese, or they may be inactive, but they are often unaware of how these health issues affect sexual function. Moreover, the doctor may advise treating the condition by increasing physical activity, and decreasing weight in addition to erectile dysfunction medication. Furthermore, erectile dysfunction has a variety of causes, including medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep disturbances and mental health problems like anxiety, sadness, stress. In addition to it, alcohol, smoking, and prescription medication for medical reasons can cause erectile dysfunction. As a result, altering one’s lifestyle is necessary to treat erectile dysfunction.
Meanwhile, Dr. Suyash Bhandekar, Consultant- IVF, Apollo Fertility Thane, Maharashtra, shared some lifestyle changes that can help in curing erectile dysfunction:

Managing stress
When we think about stress, we picture having a lot on our plate and insufficient time to complete it. Thus, the physical and psychological relationships that makeup stress are highly complicated. The body anticipates the demand for more energy when under stress, which is its most fundamental definition. All levels, from the highest (panic, rage) to the medium (frustration, deadlines), and the lowest (calm) are included in this. Moreover, as a result of insulin resistance, the body responds to every level by releasing adrenaline and putting sugar into the bloodstream to provide an individual with more energy. Adrenaline keeps the penis flaccid daily, which is the main sexual part of the stress. Therefore, even a minor concern or stress will cause the body to release adrenaline, instantly preventing the individual from getting an erection.

Exercise
Although several lifestyle modifications can help with erectile dysfunction, exercise is the one that can have the most significant influence. Exercise combats the emergence of ED and aids in its reversal once it has become a problem on multiple fronts. In addition, boosting the amount of nitric oxide in blood vessels, which is essential for a strong erection, increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure. Thus, the natural synthesis of testosterone, a key component in erectile function, can be increased by weight-bearing exercise.

Maintain a healthy diet
The blood flow to the sexual organs, such as the penis and pelvis, is maintained mainly by a healthy and balanced diet. Healthy eating practices lower a person’s risk for lifestyle issues like diabetes, vascular disease, and obesity. Include whole grains, fruits, and veggies in your diet every day. Eat less or avoid foods like red meat and processed carbohydrates, as they raise your chances of erectile dysfunction.

Limit intake of medication
Male sexual response has been reported to be impacted by the consumption of several antidepressants, sedatives, and antihistamines. The vascular actions that result in an erection are frequently under nervous system control. Moreover, certain drugs have been identified to disrupt these vital nerve signals, which impedes the sexual response.
