In a bold step towards strengthening healthcare and medical education across the state, the Telangana government has granted permissions for the establishment of eight new government medical colleges, placing one in each of the currently unserved district. This extraordinary accomplishment positions Telangana as the only state in the country to have a government medical college in every district, revolutionising healthcare accessibility and medical education.
The establishment of a series of government medical colleges in Telangana has significantly increased the number of MBBS seats in the state. From a meagre 850 seats in government colleges in 2014, the count has surged to 3,790. The eight newly sanctioned medical colleges will contribute an additional 800 seats, elevating the total count to 4,590 seats in government medical colleges. If one considers both government and private medical colleges, Telangana’s tally has soared from 20 colleges before 2014 to an impressive 56 colleges this year.
The number of MBBS seats has tripled during the period under reckoning– from 2,850 to 8,340. Including the seats from the newly established medical colleges, the total count will reach 9,140. Furthermore, private medical colleges applying for admissions next year will contribute additional seats, propelling the total MBBS seats in Telangana to an astounding 10,000.Telangana currently leads the nation with 22 MBBS seats per lakh population and occupies the second position with 7.5 PG seats. In the upcoming academic year 2023-24, Telangana will contribute 43 percent of the total new medical seats nationwide, allocating 900 seats from the state out of a grand total of 2,118 seats.
Prior to 2014, the state had a three government medical colleges. However, under the leadership of the Telangana government, an impressive total of 29 medical colleges have been established in just 9 years. The newly approved medical colleges in Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet, Mulugu, Warangal, Medak, YadadriBhongiri, Rangareddy, and MedchalMalkajgiri districts will commence classes next year, each offering 100 MBBS seats. With these additions, Telangana will boast a remarkable total of 34 government medical colleges.
By reserving 100 percent of the MBBS seats in the Competitive Authority quota for Telangana students and implementing local reservations where 85 percent of the B category seats are allocated to them, an additional 1,820 seats have been made available. These progressive decisions provide a pathway for Telangana students to fulfill their aspirations of a career in medicine while remaining in their home state.
