Minister for Prohibition and Excise V Srinivas Goud has categorically ruled out the possibility of changing the name of Palamuru University to Suravaram Pratap Reddy University. He promised not to go against the public.
He laid the foundation stone for the construction of the Central Research Facility building, to be built for Rs 10 crore, on the premises of the university.
However, he clarified that to remember the contribution of Suravaram Pratap Reddy who worked against the evil practice of untouchability and who was instrumental in running a hostel for students, his name would be added to the university. Then the name of the university would become SPR Palamuru University. However, he reiterated that the government would not change the name against the wishes of the people and students.
The Minister promised the students to ensure that law and engineering colleges are established in the town. So far, various works were taken up at a cost of Rs 40 crore in the university, he said, asking the authorities to complete the women’s hostel as early as possible.
In undivided AP, universities sanctioned to Telangana did not progress beyond laying the foundation stone stage. In the new State of Telangana, there is one university for each district and a medical college, nursing college, super-speciality hospital, several hostels, and residential schools for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minority students, he said, appealing to the students to make good use of the facilities.
Palamuru University vice-chancellor Lakshmikant Rathod, registrar Girija Mangatayaru, OSD Madhusudhan Reddy, scientist Pindi Pawan Kumar, municipal councillor Lakshmi and others were present.
