Travelling opens up a world of adventure, new experiences, and delicious cuisine. But amidst the excitement, it is important to not neglect the health and fitness goals. Maintaining an active lifestyle on the go can be challenging, but not impossible!
“A few simple tricks and choices can help you stay on track of your fitness goals while traveling. All you need is some dedication and discipline” says Miten Kakaiya, fitness and wellness coach at Miten Says Fitness.
Miten Kakaiya shares some practical and effective tips to stay active and healthy while traveling!
Power of walking
One of the easiest and most accessible fitness mantras is to walk. And while you are traveling, exploring new destinations on foot can give you an immersive experience of the culture and feel of the place. From scenic hikes, and city tours to skipping the cab for short distances – lace up your sneakers and go on long walks. You will not just burn calories but have an excellent cardiovascular workout while uncovering hidden gems of the place.
Stay hydrated
It’s a no-brainer – if you’re walking or sightseeing a lot, you need a lot of water. Drinking enough water doesn’t just keep a check on the digestive system, but also your hunger levels and body metabolism. Moreover, as you replace sugary drinks, cocktails, mocktails, and colas with water, you’ll automatically save 300-500 calories over the course of one day.
Eat fresh and local
Fancy made-to-order food? Live counters and salad bars are your best friend! “One of my favourite things about traveling is discovering new local foods of the area. It helps me explore fruits and vegetables that I wouldn’t have eaten otherwise and keeps my health in check” says Miten. Choose to dine at local eateries with authentic cuisines of that place or go for salad bars and local fresh fruits and vegetables to explore new tastes while eating healthy.
Choose a stay with fitness amenities
When picking up places to stay during your travels, opt for accommodations that have top-notch fitness facilities like a fully-functional gym, swimming pool, cycling, or other fun and adventurous activities. This way you can make some good use of your leisure time while indulging yourself in activities that keep you active and energized.
Eat in moderation
Be it a work trip ensuring you check your to-do list for the day or leisure travel where you explore new destinations when you travel, you’ll mostly be on your feet all day. Simple meals and controlled quantities are the way to go. “My suggestion is simple. Eat a heavy breakfast, a medium-sized lunch, and a very light dinner. Eating in moderation is the key to traveling healthy” adds Kakaiya. While exploring new cuisines is a great idea, ensure that you just eat enough for nourishment, nutrition, and satiating hunger.
Carry healthy snacks on the go
Rather than leaning towards unhealthy junk foods and snack counters by the street, opt to carry healthy snacks with you so you can munch on something when you feel hungry while traveling. From walnuts and pistachios to fresh fruits, greek yogurt, popcorn, or salad bowls – packing your healthy snacks will help you survive those stretches between meals without getting hangry or mindlessly binging on unhealthy treats.
If you are a foodie, maintaining a diet while you travel can seem like a nightmare! But with a little mindfulness and making healthier choices one meal at a time, you can really change the way you travel. So the next time you travel, try experimenting with some of these tips and see the results for yourself!
