Principal  Secretary to the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Dana Kishore on Tuesday said  52 per cent of the works undertaken for flood control were completed and all the remaining works should be completed.
He said, “In all, 125 water-logging locations have been identified within the GHMC; problems have been solved permanently in 22 locations, 40 locations should be removed on a war footing basis and suitable measures should be taken without storing water in the rest of the locations as well. To clean the culverts, to remove other utilities at the culverts, they want to plan. I want to everything to be clean by the first week of June.”
It is essential to focus on advanced planning ahead of monsoon so that the residents of the city do not face any difficulties or damage due to heavy rains and floods during the monsoon season. The Disaster Response Force should be alert and ready at all times. Fire, Water, GHMC, Police and other departments should organise a mock drill in the last week of May or first week of June to demonstrate how to be prepared in case of floods and to make people believe that the officials will come and be ready in case of any emergency,” Kishore added.
With  a focus on safety, 1304-km-long canals have been put in place to prevent untoward incidents during the monsoon season. “Canal audit activities should be completed on time, people are putting garbage in canals, and public awareness programmes should be made not to throw garbage in canals. It is advised to arrange small garbage bins there and take steps to collect garbage,” the Principal Secretary stressed. Officials were asked to conduct monsoon awareness programmes for the public.
Earlier zonal officers briefed the Principal Secretary regarding the preparedness under the monsoon action plan.
