The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) in Visakhapatnam is making a concerted effort to attract visitors with exciting new additions and improvements. The zoo recently acquired a variety of exotic animals, including Bengal foxes, Himalayan black bears, and vibrant scarlet macaws. These new additions come alongside several visitor-centric initiatives.
The IGZP has installed new benches and recreational areas. The zoo also welcomed a pair of giraffes, a two-year-old male and a four-year-old female, from the Kolkata Alipore Zoological Garden. These graceful herbivores are currently under quarantine for observation by the zoo’s veterinary team. This focus on new acquisitions extends beyond the recent arrivals. The IGZP has constructed new enclosures for Bengal foxes, Himalayan black bears, hippopotamuses, and other species.
Situated amidst the scenic Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, the IGZP spans a sprawling 625 acres within the Seethakonda Reserve Forest. The park boasts a diverse collection of wildlife, with over 77 species and 835 individual animals, including carnivores, birds and reptiles. The natural beauty of the park is further enhanced by rare endemic and exotic trees, shrubs, and water bodies. The unique geography of the park, nestled between two hillocks, allows for a varied habitat that supports a wide range of fauna. The adjoining Kambalakonda Eco Tourism Park is another hotspot for wildlife enthusiasts. To cater to the needs of both domestic and international tourists, the IGZP has established new cafeterias and expanded recreational facilities for children. Additionally, benches and viewing platforms have been strategically placed throughout the park for visitor comfort.
The zoo has also implemented a new animal adoption programme, allowing visitors to contribute financially while fostering a special connection with the animals. Those who participate in the programme will receive tax benefits and official adoption certificates.
