Govt buildings to be ‘solarised’

Must read

The Government of Andhra Pradesh is keen to promote solar rooftop systems in the domestic sector and in government institutions under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. The scheme proposes to ‘solarise’ government buildings in the State to meet the power requirements through solar energy in an environmentally sustainable manner. In this connection, NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd., has approached the State government.
NVVN signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NREDCAP on Wednesday in the presence of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and Minister of Energy Gottipati Ravi Kumar.
Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC; Renu Narang, CEO of NVVN; K Vijayanand, Special Chief Secretary to Government, Energy Department; KVN Chakradhara Babu, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, NREDCAP, were also present.
It is proposed to install 300 MW solar rooftop systems on government buildings in the first phase. NVVN will install the solar rooftop systems and deliver solar power at a levelised tariff, which is uniform for a period of 25 years. It is also the responsibility of the NVVN to operate and maintain the solar rooftop systems for 25 years free of cost.
This way, the government departments will save substantial amounts towards energy bills. The estimated annual savings on implementation of 300 MW solar rooftop systems in government buildings is Rs 118.27 crore. The savings over a period of 25 years is Rs 2,957 crore. The installation of 300 MW solar rooftop systems results in reduction of carbon emissions to an extent of 3.41 lakh metric tonnes per annum or 85.25 lakh metric tonnes over a period of 25 years.
