Raids to enforce ban on single-use plastic from March 1

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation officials have said that the government will conduct special raids to enforce the single-use plastic ban from March 1. Legal action, including hefty fines and the cancellation of trade licences, will be imposed on those found using or selling single-use plastics.
In an initiative to raise awareness on the ban on single-use plastics, the Municipal Corporation convened a meeting with bulk waste generators, managers from farmers’ markets, hospitals, and hotels at the VMC office on Tuesday.
The meeting, organised under the directives of VMC Commissioner HM Dhyanachandra, aimed to educate stakeholders about the harmful effects of single-use plastic waste on the environment. The Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr Suresh Babu, highlighted that single-use plastics can take over 200 years to decompose, posing a significant threat to our ecosystems. He urged everyone to adopt environmentally-friendly alternatives in markets, farmers’ bazaars, hospitals, and other relevant areas, emphasising the need to make the community aware of environmentally sustainable materials.
The officials announced that comprehensive awareness programmes will be rolled out by the end of the month, emphasising that from March 1, the government will conduct special raids to enforce the ban.
The estate officers from the Rythu bazaars, market managers, hospital managers, assistant medical health officers, sanitary supervisors, and inspectors participated in the meeting.
