AI Voice helps solve complicated legal issues

Must read

Explaining the use of AI in the context of law in a panel discussion on the second day of the Global AI Summit 2024 on Friday, Senior Curator at Agami and Lead at OpenNyAI, Varun Hemachandran said that AI Voice is a crucial tool to bridge the language gap between technology and lawyers, especially in communities with literacy challenges.
With 44 million cases pending and over 99 per cent of citizens unable to afford a lawyer, it takes 4 to 5 years to resolve a case. Hemachandran said that technology is essential to overcoming these challenges because the current physical human infrastructure cannot meet the demand.
He also mentioned the need to bring together innovators to address these issues, especially in areas where courts cannot reach. Many people can speak Hindi but cannot read it, making AI Voice a valuable tool for accessibility. He added that the legal process is difficult to navigate, and AI serves as a guide to understanding laws and the complex system.
CEO of ManCorp Innovation Labs, Manthan Trivedi, discussed the development of large language models for the Indian judiciary. He said, his company works closely with several high courts, including the Supreme Court, to test AI systems. Trivedi emphasised the importance of scaling AI awareness and application across businesses. He also stresses the need for regulatory sandboxes and phased implementation of AI to manage risks and ensure effective use.
Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR, Srikrishna Deva Rao warned that while AI can do good, its implementation in the legal system could raise serious human rights issues, especially with the use of algorithms. Many judges and legal professionals are unaware of these risks.
He advised for technical and value assessments, pilot testing and regulatory sandboxes to ensure that AI in the legal system aligns with Indian constitutional values and does not violate fundamental rights.
