AIMIM chief Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi said that his party is against the Uniform Civil Code.

“Our party will oppose the UCC and if opposition parties want to defeat the BJP then you have to show that you will not follow the agenda set by the BJP. Opposition parties are a club of big ‘Chaudharis’,” he said.

Asaduddin said that opposition parties did not invite the Telangana CM to their meeting. “He is not an ordinary person but a major player in politics,” he said.

Earlier on Saturday, Asaduddin described UCC as a political exercise aimed at diverting the debate away from key issues like poverty, unemployment and inflation.

He was addressing the media in Hyderabad on Friday as he submitted his party’s response to the Law Commission along with retired judge Gopala Gowda.

“Although the notification of the 22nd Law Commission dated June 14, 2023, has solicited views on a Uniform Civil Code, the notification does not put forth any proposal inviting comments but merely refers back to the notifications of the 21st Law Commission,” he said.

“It is no coincidence that it is almost five years since the last exercise was undertaken by the Law Commission to examine the Uniform Civil Code. Like clockwork, every time when general elections are approaching, the BJP government rakes up the UCC issue and tries to vitiate the atmosphere and polarise the electorate,” he said.

He said that Justice Chauhan who chaired the 21st Law Commission specifically said that the UCC is neither necessary nor desirable at this stage.

“The present exercise has no Constitutional basis. It is merely a political exercise aimed at sparking a public debate on a sensitive issue in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections to take the focus of the debate away from poverty, unemployment, inflation and other issues facing the country,” he said.

He added that the UCC would obliterate diverse customs and added that tribals are already opposing the UCC. Challenging Prime Minister Modi he said, “Let the PM come to Adilabad and tell the Gonds about implementing the UCC.”

He also dared Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to remove the uniform civil laws there and the BJP to inform the tribals of northeastern states of the UCC exercise.

He also dared the Assam CM who is about to bring a Bill to ban polygamy to implement it in Assam.

He also hit out at Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan over his remarks on UCC. “As a Governor he should not be praising a government. He should resign and formally join the BJP,” he said.

Targeting the Congress, he said, “If the Congress is not clear about UCC then it is giving a good message to the country that it is not clear. It is giving a good message to tribals that it is not clear.”
