Vijayawada witnessed the grand unveiling of the world’s tallest bronze statue of Dr B R Ambedkar, named the ‘Statue of Social Justice,’ marking a political move for the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). The huge monument became a strategic asset for the party in wooing Dalits and Bahujans ahead of the upcoming2024 elections, as the YSRCP capitalised on the failure of the previous TDP government to install a similar statue.
On January 19, 2024, a festive atmosphere engulfed the State as Dalits and Bahujans from all corners gathered in Vijayawada to witness the historic moment. Over a hundred and fifty thousand people congregated to celebrate the unveiling of the statue, a symbol of
the architect of the Constitution,Dr Ambedkar. The monument stood out from others, capturing the hearts of the people with its impressive presence.
Addressing the public gathering,Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy conveyed a resolute message to the over 75% population belonging to SC, ST, BC & Minority communities. He
referred to them as the ‘Backbone Class’ and pledged to empower them financially, politically, and socially.
Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy articulated his vision to transform Andhra Pradesh into an egalitarian society, following in the footsteps of Dr BR Ambedkar. He stated, “The land of
Vijayawada, once a hub of capitalism has now become the epicentre of social justice. The Ambedkar Statue in Vijayawada will inspire future generations to fight against inequality.”
In contrast, the earlier TDP government, led by Chandrababu Naidu, had promised to install the statue but faced criticism for choosing a remote village in Amaravati. The project remained confined to a groundbreaking ceremony, drawing ire from Dalit and downtrodden
leaders. Some Dalits continue to criticise Chandrababu for his comments against a section of people during his tenure.
Social Welfare Minister Merugu Nagarjuna, the driving force behind the project, asserted that Dr Ambedkar Smriti Vanam would be etched in the country’s history. He highlighted the opposition’s resistance to the statue’s installation and credited Chief Minister Jagan for overcoming challenges to make the installation of the monumental bronze statue a reality.
Christian JAC chairman Dr. Yalamanchili Praveen emphasized that the unveiling of Dr. Ambedkar’s statue demonstrated the Chief Minister’s solidarity with Dalits and the downtrodden.
Dr Praveen commended Jagan for his commitment to social justice, citing the appointment of Deputy CMs from all communities. He also noted that while Ambedkar may lack recognition in India, Columbia University has included him in its curriculum, increasing awareness about Dr Ambedkar. Dr Praveen anticipated that Dr Ambedkar Smriti Vanam would become a tourist attraction, and he expressed strong support from the Dalits
and Bahujans for Chief Minister Jagan, endorsing his leadership for the State.
