Archbishop Udumala Bala of Visakhapatnam has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing it as an irreplaceable loss to both the Catholic Church and the global community. Pope Francis, aged 88, breathed his last after a prolonged battle with a severe lung infection. His health had been in a critical state during the recent weeks.
In a heartfelt tribute, Archbishop Bala fondly recalled his personal association with the late pontiff. “Pope Francis was a humble and transformative leader. He redefined the papacy by breaking away from its traditional regal image and embracing a life of simplicity,” the Archbishop said.
He praised the Pope’s commitment to peace and justice, noting his strong denunciations of war. “He spoke boldly against violence and conflict, especially advocating for peace in Ukraine, Russia, Israel, and Palestine,” he added.
The Archbishop highlighted Pope Francis’ historic role as the first South American and the first Jesuit to ascend to the papacy. “He brought a unique pastoral approach, marked by deep compassion for the poor and marginalised, and a strong voice for social justice.”
Reflecting on a personal milestone, he shared that he was the first Indian bishop to be appointed by Pope Francis in 2013. “He later entrusted me with the role of Archbishop of Visakhapatnam. This connection was special, and I feel a profound sense of loss,” he said. Archbishop Bala extended his deepest condolences to the global Catholic fraternity and offered prayers for the eternal rest of Pope Francis’ soul.
