Be vigilant on early symptoms of eye cancer: Expert

Must read

Dr. Anasua Ganguly Kapoor, Eye Cancer Specialist and Campus Head at LV Prasad Eye Institute, Vijayawada, on Friday underscored the importance of vigilance among parents and physicians. Early symptoms, such as a white reflex in a child’s eye and squinting, should be promptly addressed. Subtle signs like variations in eye size, redness, or swollen eyelids must not be overlooked, requiring a timely consultation with an eye cancer specialist.
In a press note released on the eve of World Cancer Day on February 4, Dr Ganguly said the prognosis for retinoblastoma is optimistic when confined to the eye, with survival rates exceeding 90%. However, these rates drop to 70% when the tumour extends beyond the eye, becoming more critical if it spreads into the brain. Early detection remains pivotal for a successful cure.
Dr. Ganguly emphasised the crucial role of parents in early diagnosis, advocating for education on often overlooked symptoms. She suggests integrating comprehensive eye exams into mandatory paediatric check-ups.
