Call for eco-friendly Harita Bhogi celebrations

Must read

In a bid to curb pollution and protect the city’s infrastructure, Greater Visakhapatnam
Municipal Commissioner CA Saikanth Verma has issued an appeal to residents to celebrate
the upcoming Harita Bhogi festival in an environmentally conscious manner.
Citing the city’s ongoing efforts to become environment-friendly and pollution free, Commissioner Verma urged citizens to organise their Harita Bhogi celebrations with
an eco-conscious focus.
He specifically called for avoiding the disposal of old tyres and other polluting materials in bonfires, a common practice during the festival.
Highlighting the detrimental impact of bonfires on road infrastructure, Commissioner Verma
emphasised the potential for damage caused by the intense heat. He explained that burning bonfires on roads could melt the tar, leading to road cracks and the formation
of potholes.
To ensure both city cleanliness and road maintenance, residents were advised to opt for lighting fires in designated public spaces, fields, and open areas. Verma warned that
strict action would be taken against any individuals found setting bonfires on the roads.
The Commissioner’s appeal underscores the importance of striking a balance between celebrating traditions and protecting the environment.
