Marking International Women’s Day, the NDA government in Andhra Pradesh has announced a new initiative to empower women by providing training in tailoring and distributing free sewing machines. The scheme aims to enhance the economic prospects of women across the State.
State BC Welfare Minister S Savitha said that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is committed to women’s empowerment and is encouraging them to take up small businesses such as retail shops, tailoring, and the production of incense sticks, palm oil, and traditional handicrafts, including Kondapalli toys and Mangalagiri sarees.
As part of the initiative, training in tailoring will be provided to 1,02,832 women on March 8, along with the distribution of sewing machines. Minister Savitha urged women to seize this opportunity to become financially independent and contribute to the state’s economic growth.
She highlighted that the government is fulfilling its election promises, citing the provision of three free LPG cylinders annually to women. The decision to offer tailoring training and free sewing machines has been widely appreciated, as it acknowledges the vital role of women in society.
Recalling the contributions of former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao, she noted that he had ensured equal property rights for women and their participation in governance. Following his legacy, CM Naidu has granted house titles in women’s names and facilitated construction projects under their ownership. The government has also reserved 33.33% of educational and employment opportunities for women.
The scheme will benefit women from BC, EWS, and Kapu communities across all 175 Assembly constituencies, with Rs 255 crore allocated for its implementation. The BC Welfare Corporation will select 46,044 beneficiaries, while 45,772 will be from the EWS category and 11,016 from the Kapu community. The selection process is in its final stages, the minister added.
