Countdown starts for Telangana Assembly elections

Must read

With the Election Commission of India focussing on the Telangana Assembly elections, all major political parties have increased their attention on Telangana.

In fact, the countdown has started for the Telangana Assembly elections. The major contenders, the BRS, the Congress and the BJP, have set their targets.

While the BRS is concentrating on scoring a hat-trick the Congress wants to revive its old glory and the BJP wants to recoup its image after the defeat in Karnataka by winning in Telangana.

In Telangana, there are 119 Assembly seats. A political party needs 61 seats to reach the magic figure. In this context, all major political parties have fixed their targets.

The ruling BRS has fixed its target as 100-plus seats. It may be recalled that BRS President Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao recently told a party meeting that the BRS is going to win 95 to 105 seats.

The main opposition Congress has also fixed its target as 80 plus seats. TPCC President Revanth Reddy is confident of winning 80-plus seats in the Telangana Assembly elections.

On the other hand, the BJP is also aiming to achieve a majority. After the defeat in Karnataka, the Telangana Assembly elections have become a life-and-death battle for the BJP in South India.

The BJP says that it will fight the Assembly elections alone without any alliance and will achieve its target. That means the BJP is very much confident of winning 61 plus seats.

In the 2018 Assembly elections, the BRS won 88 seats, the Congress 23 and the BJP won only a single seat. The BRS has to win 18 more seats, the Congress 57 more seats and the BJP has to win 60 seats more to reach their targets.

Meanwhile, all three political parties are trying to keep their leaders and cadres busy. The three parties are taking up programmes to activate their cadres.

After the defeat in Karnataka, the BJP is now out of power in 15 states. Due to this, retaining power at the Centre in the next Lok Sabha elections has become a difficult task for the BJP. The BJP thinks that to save face it must win the Telangana Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, the Congress which is in a jubilant mood after the victory in Karnataka wants to continue the tempo by winning the Telangana Assembly elections. The BRS wants to prove that they have no opposition in Telangana by registering a hat-trick victory.
