Curious political battle unfolds in Nagarkurnool LS constituency

Must read

A curious political battle has unfolded in Nagarkurnool Lok Sabha constituency with a Congress dissident entering the poll fray. It was thought to be a three-cornered contest.
But, with Congress dissident Mandha Jagannadham entering the poll fray, the constituency is now witnessing a four-cornered contest. The BRS, BJP and Congress embarked on a fierce campaign. With RS Praveen Kumar quitting the BSP and joining the BRS, Jagannadham secured the BSP ticket to contest from Nagarkurnool.
The BRS fielded Praveen Kumar from Nagarkurnool. Jagannatham quit the Congress as he was denied a ticket to contest.
Congress candidate Mallu Ravi, however, is confident of winning the elections. The sitting BRS Lok Sabha member crossed over to the BJP. The saffron party fielded him from the constituency.
The constituency has a total electorate of 17,34,773 voters. The constituency has a considerable number of Scheduled Caste voters.
The BRS, BJP and BSP candidates belonged to the same community while Congress candidate Mallu Ravi belonged to a different community.
Irrespective of the caste equations, in many constituencies Congress candidates were elected in the recent Assembly elections.
BRS nominee RS Pravin Kumar and BSP candidate Jagannadham belonged to the Alampur Assembly segment, while BJP nominee P Bharat belonged to the Kalwakurthy constituency.
Malluravi was elected to Lok Sabha twice and Mandha Jagannadham four times from the constituency. Mallu Ravi, who joined the Congress-affiliated organisations during his student days, has been continuing in the Congress.
He worked as the State Government’s representative in Delhi during YS Rajasekhar Reddy’s regime.
Mandha Jagannadham was first elected MP in 1996 on a TDP ticket. He went on to become MP four times during the TDP regime.
He joined the TRS and contested the LS election in 2014 only to get defeated at the hands of Nandi Yellaiah of the Congress.
