Chef Ranveer Brar needs no introduction. He has amassed a great following through his work in the kitchen. His YouTube channel has over five million subscribers, and it has been India’s most trusted source during the COVID-19 lockdown, when almost every Tom, Dick, and Harry tried their hand at cooking. He is also immensely popular for hosting shows such as Thank God It’s Fryday, Raja Rasoi Aur Andaaz Anokha, and You Got Chef’d, amongst others. This time around, he is back with a brand new food adventure series titled Dum Laga Ke India, which aired on Disney+Hotstar for the first time on November 9.
The theme of the show is that our master chef goes on the road to explore a variety of signature dishes in four different cities, namely, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Calcutta, and Bengaluru. He just doesn’t taste the food in these cities, but he takes us through the origins of the dish. Do you have an idea why and how “Pav Bhaji” was invented? Or what about “Osmania Biscuits”? All four episodes provide ample entertainment, and the trivia adds to the experience. Not just that, every episode features some of the most well-known stars, like Vaani Kapoor, Badminton Champion P.V. Sindhu, singer Armaan Malik, and Pranitha Subhash.
A food-travel show needs exquisite locations, and the makers go all in on the production quality. The show is visually appealing, and the background music used to amp up the vibe of the episodes has been handled masterfully. Let’s talk about the host, Ranveer Brar is simply superb with his one liners and constant commentary. The way he explains the origins of a particular dish or a joint makes you think, “Well! That’s passion right there.”
The sequence where Vaani Kapoor and Ranveer dance, him pleading with P.V. Sindhu to go easy on the badminton court, singing a song with Armaan Malik, or the way he praises Pranitha Subhash for simply loving food make for a great watch.
One of the central themes of the show is to capture the essence of the city through the perspective of Chef Ranveer and the special guests. The creators take us through some of the iconic food places in the respective cities. For example, the street food at Khau Galli in Mumbai, Ranveer’s take on the Parsi Irani Cafes at the corners of the financial capital of India, or why he likes Charminar so much. All these things give the audience a deep look into the presenter’s zest for food.
However, the run time of each episode is around 20 to 24 minutes, and at the end of each episode, we end up wanting more. It would’ve been a delight to watch the creators concentrate more on the food. It is understandable that covering every dish and place in a short time is impossible, but a lot could have been done better. For instance, at the end of every episode, we see the host and guest opening the cute little Biryani by Kilo pot. If you were not aware of this, the show is presented by Biryani by Kilo.Well, that doesn’t mean that at the end of every episode we get to see people eating their food.
Although the showrunners have integrated all these aspects well, the series feels a tad promotional. If only they had spent some more time exploring more dishes with the celebs, perhaps on the city streets in a casual way, that would have made the show an intriguing watch.
Is Dum Laga Ke India for you? Well, if you like watching a food travel show with great production quality, good hosting, and decent progression without much excitement, this is for you. Certainly, it is not bad at all, but that extra punch seems to be missing despite the special appearances. Dum Laga Ke India, hosted by Chef Ranveer Brar, presented by Biryani by Kilo, is now streaming on Disney+Hotstar and is all set for its release on Youtube today.
