Gen Z is investing in memories, not material things—and skincare plays a role

Must read

Luxury and self-care are no longer about flaunting possessions or chasing fleeting trends. Today, they’re about embracing experiences that resonate on a deeper level – moments that bring joy, create connection and spark a sense of purpose. For Gen Z, this shift is more than a trend, it’s becoming a lifestyle.

What makes this generation stand out is how intentionally they approach life. They are choosing to spend their time and money on things that make them feel alive like the rush of a live concert, the calm of a morning skincare ritual, or the fulfillment of investing in their well-being.

Manish Chowdhary, Co-Founder of WOW Skin Science, summed it up perfectly in a recent Instagram video. “Gen Z, in particular, is choosing experiences that make them feel alive like concerts and live events over material things that lose value over time,” he shared.

Redefining the ‘Care’ in Skincare

The same mindset is driving a change in the way younger people approach self-care. Skincare for example has moved from being a mere daily routine to a form of self-expression. It’s no longer just about buying a product because it’s trendy. They seek products with a story, a purpose, or values that resonate with their beliefs. Clean beauty, cruelty-free formulas and sustainable packaging are not just optional anymore, they are expectations. This generation wants to know that their choices reflect who they are and what they stand for.

Clearly, the focus is on creating meaningful experiences. “Today, concerts are where Gen Z finds their sense of belonging,” Chowdhary says. “They are not just attending events, they are sharing these moments, building connections, and showcasing their identity through the experiences they choose.

And isn’t that what skincare does, too? It is about carving out a moment in your day, showing yourself some love and expressing who you are. Beyond the ingredients, the experience matters too. Skincare is now viewed as an act of self-care, mindfulness and even empowerment. Whether it’s the calming ritual of a jade roller, the indulgence of a sheet mask or the confidence that comes from glowing skin, every step is an experience in itself. Brands that offer more than just products and stand for something meaningful, are the ones thriving in this new era.

In Essence

In India, this wave is growing stronger. Just as international stars like Ed Sheeran and Coldplay are turning the country into a concert hotspot, skincare brands are stepping up to create products that resonate deeply.

So, whether you are splurging on that dream concert ticket or indulging in a skincare ritual that feels like therapy, remember, it is these experiences that make life unforgettable. As Chowdhary puts it, “This is not just a trend, it’s a beautiful change, a generation choosing what truly makes them feel alive.”
