NTR District Collector, S Dilli Rao, has underscored the significance of addressing gender discrimination as a main obstacle to women’s development and urged collective participation in tackling this issue. He emphasised the crucial role of enforcing relevant laws to change society.
The District Collector flagged off a rally on the ‘Elimination of Gender-Based Violence against Women,’ organised by the Society for the Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) and NTR Zilla Samakhya at Gollapudi Sachivalayam near Vijayawada on Saturday. Subsequently, he led a pledge with all participants.
During the event, the Collector remarked that women today are efficiently fulfilling their responsibilities on par with men, pointing out the absence of gender inequalities in developed countries. To combat gender discrimination, he highlighted the State government’s stringent implementation of relevant acts. Stressing the need for comprehensive change, he advocated for the organisation of awareness meetings across the State, not solely relying on legislative measures.
Furthermore, the Collector addressed the issue of child marriages in rural areas, commending the efforts of Zilla Samakhya members to control them. He suggested that members also monitor the financial positions of women, asserting that enhancing the literacy rate among girls could facilitate achieving gender equality.
Participating in the event were NTR District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Project Director K. Srinivasa Rao, District Water and Management Agency (DWAMA) PD J. Sunitha, ICDS PD G. Uma Devi, DAO S. Naga Manemma, Vijayawada Rural MPDO Jahnavi, Zilla Samakhya President K. Seetha, Secretary K. Rani, and others.
