The Pioneer has been providing readers with behind-the-scenes interviews from the hit film Fighter. And now, not that we cannot ignore the villain of the amazing film who was casted opposite Hrithik Roshan — we were able to get in touch with Rishabh Sawhney, the film’s main antagonist who became obsessed with changing who he was for the sake of the film, and how.
He starts out by telling us in the interview, “Yes, I was a civil engineer before, but even though I joined the field, I had a different knack. I decided to go for it because it was a more prudent and secure financial choice. But when I realized I couldn’t work in construction for the rest of my life, a few pals advised me to move to Bombay and pursue a career in cinema.”
For him, it was anything from simple. He just wanted to give it a go, not that he was much of an actor! How does being in front of the camera feel? He admitted to us that he thought acting would be a lot easier than the other tasks when he was moving, and the reality hit him. ‘Yeh toh main bhi karlunga’ was how he felt. However, he felt as like he had lost the ability to talk the moment he turned to face the camera for the first time in his life! It was the city of dreams that encouraged him to take acting seriously. Currently drawing accolades for his fierce avatar, the actor continues, “A greater obstacle than fighting Hrithik Roshan in the movie, (as he giggles), was keeping the project’s confidentiality. I had an opulent film with Hrithik and Deepika, and I wanted to scream it out loud, but I wasn’t supposed to. However, I do recall going through with further auditions after trying out for the movie without knowing who the leading couple was. However, I received a call to audition for a final role, and after nearly eight iterations, I was selected to star opposite Hrithik Roshan.” A memory that will never fade for Rishabh!
“I had received clear instructions from the director to appear larger than Hrithik in terms of stature. After all, you’re up against the Greek god of Bollywood! The entire movie then centers on air force pilots. (He laughed aloud) at the director’s exact instructions, which were to ‘think of yourself as Thanos and as if you are fighting the Avengers.’ I was most excited about physicality now that I had experience with body building. I was told to go big, but since there was no fixed limit, I continued as if I were the Hulk,” mentioned the actor, who had gone all out to project a menacing character.
He also continues, “I had to employ health coaches, a nutritionist, and a personal trainer. I had an acting coaching for my mental preparation! To fully immerse myself in the role, I was also instructed to limit my viewing to war documentaries. We were so serious about the part that I even viewed the interviews with a few terrorists. And it didn’t even somewhat annoy me. I could sense the change in my thinking—it got forceful! The filmmaker was perfectly going for the more irritated vibe I was experiencing.”
On the other hand, because these baddies truly had no idea what a typical day is like, Rishabh began to feel sorry for them. There is no one to lead them down the path of true patriotism; they are only engaged in bombardment. So he became furious as a result! And that fury was directed towards the things that had transpired to this earth, benefiting humanity. “Since it’s so difficult for an outsider to break into this industry without contacts, I have no thoughts of being stereotyped as a nasty villain. All I have to say is thanks! My “dream project” is this one, not simply any other project. The cast was enormous! Since my primary goal is to keep bagging projects, I don’t mind if I end up being typecast. Additionally, I play a totally different character in the film than I do in real life. This is a message to aspiring directors: if you want me to play an evil villain, I can do it,” the much-known “evil villian” from the film Fighter added.
He also said, “We were filming a scene in May, and following the sequence, I suffered from a heatstroke. After that, I was being looked after by a spot boy, who and that too for a newcomer like me. After that, Siddharth didn’t let me exert myself! My heart was won over by that gesture. In addition, I was very anxious to perform action scenes with Hrithik since I didn’t want to hurt him in any way. When we were practicing hand-to-hand combat, he noticed my anxiety and encouraged me to take a swing at him. That’s when I started to feel at ease with him.”
Finally, the actor informed us that certain preconceptions still exist. Casting directors believe a model cannot act! From now on, his sole priorities are to improve, develop himself, and deliver ever more incredible celluloid sequences.
