In a pioneering move to enhance hygiene and sanitation facilities across the city, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has initiated the ‘Adopt a Toilet Campaign’, encouraging corporates, NGOs, and private companies to actively participate in the upkeep of public and community toilets.
Under the leadership of GVMC Commissioner C.M. Saikanth Varma, the campaign seeks to redefine the standards of public hygiene. Commissioner Varma emphasized the need for toilets that are not just functional but also accessible, clean, eco-friendly, and safe.
“We believe in the transformative power of clean and accessible sanitation facilities. The ‘Adopt a Toilet Campaign’ is a collaborative effort to ensure that our public and community toilets meet the highest standards of functionality, cleanliness, and safety. By inviting corporates, NGOs, and private companies, we aim to create a sustainable and inclusive sanitation infrastructure for the city,” Commissioner Varma added.
City Mayor Golagani Hari Venkata Kumar echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the pivotal role of public and community toilets in maintaining urban hygiene. Mayor Kumar underscored the essential nature of such facilities for the well-being of the community and the prevention of diseases. “Access to clean and safe toilets is a fundamental right of every citizen. The ‘Adopt a Toilet Campaign’ is a step,” Mayor Kumar affirmed.
Adopted toilets will undergo regular inspections and maintenance to ensure they meet specified standards. Corporates and organizations participating in the campaign will receive recognition for their contributions to the community’s well-being.
As cities worldwide grapple with sanitation and hygiene challenges, initiatives like the ‘Adopt a Toilet Campaign’ showcase a proactive approach to addressing these issues at the local level. By fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, GVMC aims to transform the city into a place where every citizen has access to clean, safe, and functional toilet facilities, ultimately contributing to the overall health and well-being of the community.
