The AP High Court on Tuesday sentenced the Commissioner of Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) to one-month simple imprisonment in the case of encroaching on endowment land Yadavalli Satram in Kothapet at Guntur and contempt of court case.
Kappagantu Janakiram of Vijayawada filed a writ petition in the High Court stating that the property of the Yadavalli Satram was used illegally by the Guntur Municipal Corporation running a school without paying a single rupee. The GMC officials said that they are going to appeal the HC order. Phanidut Chanakya, advocate for the petitioner, said that the 3,300-yard land of Yadavalli’s Satram at Kothapet in Guntur city was occupied by the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) in the year 1965 and is still running a school under the name of Kasu Sayamma Municipal School. Advocate Phanidut argued that anyone who took possession of the property of the Yadavalli Satram without a valid lease would be an illegal occupier. He claimed that the government departments are no exception to this and have been using the property of the Satram for years without permission.
The High Court has sentenced the Commissioner of Guntur Municipal Corporation to one month simple imprisonment along with a fine of 2,000 and the High Court ordered the Commissioner to surrender at the office of the High Court Registrar on January 2, 2024. The GMC officials said that they are going to appeal the HC order.
