Health dept issues advisory as TG faces heavy rainfall

Must read

The Public Health and Family Welfare Department has issued a general advisory to help residents protect themselves from seasonal diseases as Telangana experiences heavy rainfall.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad, districts across the State are under a red alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rain, and an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in several other districts.
This could result in lower temperatures and increased humidity, creating ideal conditions for viral infections and mosquito-borne diseases.
“The government has made special arrangements in public health facilities, including extra beds, IV fluids, essential medicines and ORS sachets available through local health workers to address any emergencies that may arise,” said Dr B Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health and Family Welfare.

Preventing mosquito-borne diseases
Ensure doors and windows are fitted with mosquito nets or screens. Repair any holes promptly and keep them closed during peak mosquito activity (early morning and evening).
Cover beds and cribs with insecticide-treated mosquito nets, ensuring the nets are securely tucked around the bed.
Dress children in light-coloured clothing that covers arms and legs.
Apply mosquito repellent creams, lotions or sprays before going outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk. Avoid applying repellent on hands, mouth, eyes, or open wounds and discontinue use if allergic. Use chemical repellents like liquid vaporizers, mats and coils with caution, keeping them out of the reach of children.
Observe a ‘dry day’ each week to remove stagnant water from around the house, including flower pots, cans, tires, buckets and coolers. Keep lawns well-trimmed.

Preventing water-borne infections
Drink filtered or boiled water and opt for bottled water when outside. Wash hands frequently, especially before meals and after using the restroom. Carry and use hand sanitizers.
Avoid consuming raw, pre-cut or uncovered food from street vendors and opt for freshly made home-cooked meals. Discard any food leftovers.  Preventing airborne infections: Avoid close contact with sick individuals and do not share food, water or clothing when unwell.
Minimize contact with public surfaces such as door handles, lift buttons and railings. Seek medical attention if you develop flu-like symptoms such as cough with fever, headache, sore throat, body aches or conjunctivitis.
