In India, the integration of AI in education has showcased remarkable potential, reshaped traditional methods, and brought forth a new era of personalised learning and innovation. India holds an important place in the global education industry and has one of the largest networks of higher education institutions in the world. According to the report of IBEF, India had 41.38 million students enrolled in higher education in 2020–21, and the size of the online education market in India is expected to grow by US$ 2.28 billion during 2021–2025.

Personalising education
for every student
Every student is different and unique in terms of learning patterns, pace, and style. Sometimes, it becomes challenging for teachers to design a curriculum that meets the needs of each student. According to a report by the Indian Ministry of Education, personalised learning contributes to improving student performance by increasing retention rates and overall academic achievements. AI becomes invaluable in these scenarios, as it can customise educational experiences by analysing individual learning patterns and adjusting content to match each student’s pace and style.

Automation of administrative tasks
Outside of classrooms, AI is making things easier for school offices. A survey by Deloitte found that 67% of education leaders think AI will help with tasks like handling admissions, grading, and keeping track of student records.
AI-powered automation not only reduces the administrative burden on educators but also enhances accuracy and efficiency. As per the World Economic Forum, the implementation of AI in administrative tasks could reduce the time spent on routine administrative duties by 20%, allowing teachers to focus more on teaching and mentoring students.

Enhancing engagement and empowering learners

Technologies such as AR and VR help create immersive learning environments. AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants provide immediate academic assistance by answering questions and providing guidance. Students become active participants, leading to a higher level of engagement and a deeper understanding of complex concepts.

Gamification and interactive learning
Gamification, which involves incorporating game-like elements into educational activities, is gaining traction with the help of AI. As per the report by MarketsandMarkets, the global gamification in the education market is projected to reach USD 3.5 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 32.0% during the forecast period.

AI enables the creation of intelligent educational games that adapt to the skill levels and progress of individual students. This not only makes learning more enjoyable but also enhances retention and understanding.

Data-driven insights
AI analytics offer valuable insights into student performance and learning patterns. Teachers can use this data to identify areas for improvement, adapt teaching strategies, and provide targeted interventions.

Education institutions must acknowledge and address the potential pitfalls associated with artificial intelligence (AI) in learning environments. These risks may include:

1. Students could rely too much on AI tools rather than exploring genuine learning.
2. Students may use AI tools to cheat, such as using ChatGPT to write assignments.
3. AI tools may not be inclusive, reflecting a deficit in cultural diversity within existing resources.
4. The introduction of new technologies poses risks to data security and students’ privacy, particularly in the absence of adequate safeguards.

Educational institutions need to formulate innovative strategies to monitor these emerging risks. For instance, audio and video assessments could be used to control AI-based cheating. This proactive approach ensures that the potential benefits of AI are used responsibly and ethically in the educational landscape.
AI is undeniably a game changer in the Indian education sector. As we move forward, it is imperative to embrace AI responsibly, leveraging its potential to create an inclusive and progressive educational landscape for the benefit of all learners.
