Members of the Joint Action Committee of various political parties and mass organisations have demanded that the Centre dismiss the BJP government in Manipur and impose President’s rule.
They held the Manipur government guilty of driving a wedge between two tribal communities and unleashing violence.
It demanded the immediate dismissal of the Manipur government headed by Chief Minister Biren Singh. It also demanded the dismissal of Union Home Minister Amit Shah from the Cabinet.
The JAC leaders and activists staged a two-hours protest. The JAC took out a rally from Rajiv crossroads in the town and proceeded via Gudivada Cross Roads.
The movement of vehicles on the road was affected for over two hours. A large number of people took part in the protest voluntarily and pledged their support to the JAC.
Several political leaders blamed the BJP accusing it of creating a conflict between Kuki and Maite sects of tribal people.
As part of the violence, hundreds of homes had been torched, crops destroyed, persons were murdered, women were paraded naked and gang-raped were perpetrated, they said alleging that several hundred have been killed due to the violence.
The protesters called the rulers fascist. They accused the BJP of creating communal clashes to derive political mileage in the forthcoming elections.
It is also accused of trampling human rights and butchering democracy. They demanded safeguards for women’s rights and sought protection for them.
