Jagan, KCR await SC verdict

Must read

PNS | Hyderabad

By a strange combination of circumstances, today the Chief Ministers of both Telugu States are awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision for underlining their stance on Andhra Pradesh’s capital.

TS Chief Minister and BRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao, having entered AP politics, has to take a stand on the controversy over the location of AP capital(s). Sources said that KCR had decided to take call after taking note of the Supreme Court’s verdict on the matter.

AP Chief Minister YS Jagan too is waiting for the SC’s decision on the matter to be able to start his government’s administration from Visakhapatnam. Jagan has been making preparations to shift administration to Visakhapatnam from April. Reports suggest that Jagan has decided to rule the state from Visakhapatnam from April after the budget session of the Assembly.

KCR, having entered AP politics, must take a clear stance on the state capital. There is talk that KCR may hold a huge public meeting in Vijayawada after Sankranti. By that time KCR has to take a stance on Andhra Pradesh’s capital.

The opposition parties, including BJP, want to continue Amaravati as the state capital. However, the ruling YSR Congress government is firm on establishing three capitals in Andhra Pradesh. The Andhra Pradesh High Court has given a judgment in favour of Amaravati as the state capital. The AP State government later filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court against the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s verdict on the proposed three capitals.

When the foundation stone was laid for AP capital by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the the Chandrababu Naidu regime, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao also attended the function. In fact, KCR was prepared to announce some financial assistance to the AP government for the construction of the capital at Amaravati. Since Modi did not commit any financial assistance for the construction of the capital at Amaravati, KCR too remained silent, according to the TS Chief Minister’s subsequent statement at a media conference. This had indicated that KCR supported Amaravati as AP’capital.

Things changed after YS Jagan Mohan Reddy became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 2019. Jagan decided to establish three capitals, instead of developing Amaravati alone. He proposed to establish Amaravati as Legislative capital, Visakhapatnam as administrative capital, and Kurnool as judicial capital. But all the opposition parties opposed this proposal and demanded that the state government should continue Amaravati as the state capital.

Finally the issue reached the AP High Court and it gave a verdict against the stats government’s proposal to establish three capitals. The HC directed that Amaravati should continue as the state capital. Appealing the AP High Court’s decision, the state government has approached the Supreme Court.

After three capitals issue became controversial, KCR has not announced his stand on the issue. Now it is high time he took a clear stance, considering that BRS has started its political activity in AP. The BRS leadership also announced its AP state president.

Political circles are keenly awaiting KCR to take a clear stance on AP capital before making any other political move.
