Senior Congress leader K. Jana Reddy has abstained from applying for the Nagarjuna Sagar ticket and gave a chance to his younger son K. Raghuveer Reddy and the latter applied for the Nagarjuna Sagar ticket.
Jana Reddy won five times from Chalakurthi and twice from Nagarjuna Sagar. Chalakurthy became Nagarjuna Sagar constituency in 2009. Jana Reddy, who had handled several portfolios as a Minister, lost elections four times in 1978, 1994, 2018 and 2021.
Jana Reddy contested on a Janata Party ticket and lost his first election in 1978 to Nimmala Ramulu of the Congress. Later, he joined the TDP and won in 1983 and 1985. However, Jana Reddy differed with TDP supremo NTR, quit the TDP and floated a political party named Telugu Mahanadu in 1988.
However, he merged his party with the Congress.
He won from Chalakurthi in 1989 but lost to G. Rammurthy in 1994. However, Jana Reddy won four times continuously from 1999 to 2014 from the Congress.
Jana Reddy lost elections in 2018 and in the 2021 by-poll to Nomula Narsimhaiah and Nomula Bhagath respectively. Nomula Bhagath defeated K. Jana Reddy by 18,000 votes in a by-poll. The by-poll was held due to Nomula Bhagath’s father Nomula Narsimhaiah’s death.
BRS President K. Chandrasekhar Rao gave a chance to Nomula Bhagath once again to contest from Nagarjuna Sagar. Bhagath secured a place in the BRS candidates’ list announced on August 21.
However, Jana Reddy decided to stay away from elections and gave a chance to his son Raghuveer Reddy. August 25 is the last day for submitting applications for a Congress ticket. One has to wait and see whether Jana Reddy changes his mind or not. The Congress will announce its candidates after examining the applications and conducting surveys.
