As the chilly winter days approach, we start our preparation and get ready with woolen clothes to shield our body against the cold waves and keep us warm. However, our preparation should also include eye care as eyes are equally exposed to the cold as any other body part. By incorporating a few changes in our lifestyle, we can make winter easy for our eyes.
Sunglasses: A must-have for the winter too
Who does not crave to soak their bodies in sunshine during the winter months? Yes, although the sunlight might apparently feel gentle on the skin and eyes during this time of the year, do not forget that it still is a source of harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. These rays can be damaging to our delicate eyes. Therefore, wear a pair of UV-protectant glasses whenever you decide to soak in the sunshine.
Lubricating eye drops
The windy cold waves rip the moisture off the eyes. Using lubricating eye drops is an excellent way to make up for the lost moisture. While these eye drops are available over the counter, do consult an ophthalmologist as they will be able to recommend the right type of eye drops based on the degree ofthe dry eye condition or other eye-related issues you might be experiencing.
Indoor humidifier
Using heaters when indoors is a common sight during winters. This usually leads to dry eyes and skin. Using an indoor humidifier is a great way to make up for the lost moisture in the air. However, ensure that you regularly clean the humidifier according to the manufacturer’s instructions as the stagnant water can lead to the growth of pathogens and therefore a source of infections.
Dietary changes to incorporate
Increase your intake of food rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish and cod liver oil and seeds like flax seeds and chia seeds as it can help alleviate the symptoms of dry eyes. Besides, ensure that leafy greens like spinach always find a place on your plate. These are rich in compounds called carotenoids that protect our eyes from the damaging effects of sunlight.
Hydration
While sipping on a steaming cup of tea and coffee gives the much-needed warmth, you must remember to maintain your hydration levels by consuming water throughout the day.
The arrival of the winter months demands certain preparations. And while you are at it, make sure that you do not forget to incorporate measures to ensure your eyes remain healthy. Eyes usually turn dry due to fierce cold winds or the use of indoor heating equipment. However, you can take charge of eye health by wearing sunglasses when heading out in the sun, using a humidifier when indoors, applying lubricating eye drops, drinking adequate amounts of water daily and consuming a well-balanced diet including leafy greens and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
