Appointing a new Krishna Tribunal is now in the hands of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. AG Venkataramani refused to give an opinion on whether a tribunal should be appointed or not.

The Centre has sought the Attorney General’s opinion on the constitution of a new tribunal. However, the AG clarified that he could not give an opinion as he had appeared in cases on behalf of Andhra Pradesh in the past.

With this, the Centre sent the file to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for his opinion. A decision on the formation of a new tribunal is likely to be taken after hearing the opinion of Tushar Mehta.

Telangana is demanding a new tribunal to decide the distribution of Krishna waters between the two Telugu States. After that, Telangana approached the Supreme Court to notify the verdict of the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal. However, the Centre promised to take a decision on setting up a new tribunal if Telangana’s petition is withdrawn.

After this, Telangana withdrew the petition filed in the Supreme Court. But the Union Law Department initially expressed the view that there is no need to set up a new tribunal.

The Centre then sent the opinion of the Union Law Department to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. After getting Tushar’s opinion, the Centre is likely to take a decision on setting up a new tribunal.
