Telangana IT Minister KT Rama Rao (KTR) on Tuesday urged representatives of Flipkart to work on a model where a readily–employable workforce from the Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge (TASK) can be absorbed into the firm.

The minister virtually inaugurated the Flipkart fulfillment centre in Sangareddy. The  e-commerce firm is planning to create 40,0000 jobs at the new facility.

“Digitisation has enhanced prospects for local economies to grow and thrive, and this is being reinforced by e-commerce. The new facility by Flipkart will strengthen pan-India market access for local sellers and encourage many of our local communities to become a part of the digital revolution,” he remarked.

Addressing a gathering at ITC Kakatiya, the   minister said, “E-commerce is re-defining businesses and how they are done. The media has latched on to a new word, ‘gig-economy’ and ‘gig-jobs’. Earlier, there was work from home and how this gig economy and gig-jobs and e-commerce are creating newer opportunities and jobs. There is a need to take care of gig-workers by ensuring that there lively-hoods are protected. Creating 40,000 jobs is very good, there is a need to understand the methods to ensure that these employees feel secure and are not affected by external factors.”

“Let Telangana make a statement that the gig-workers will be taken care of through collaboration between the government, FlipKart and its partnering vendors. They will have the confidence that the job will provide a livelihood and if something goes wrong you will be taken care of,” he stressed. The minister also stressed on the need to hire more women from the self-help groups across the state.

KTR further said, “It is interesting how India has adapted to selling and buying everything online including groceries, electronics, fashion goods etc. There was a time when people said Indians are touchy-feely and they have to touch things before purchasing.”

Flipkart CEO, Kalyan Krishna Murthy said, “Building strong infrastructure is the backbone of e-commerce. It creates equitable opportunities for small and large businesses alike, helping reach millions of customers nationwide. In line with our commitment to the country’s economic progress, we have made important investments across India through upskilling opportunities, infrastructure, and technological advancements.”
