Dasara celebrations in Telangana have once again contributed to a massive surge in alcohol sales, bringing in record-breaking Rs 291.24 crore in revenue for the State government from Rangareddy and Vikarabad districts. As with many major festivals in the region, alcohol sales soared as revelers gathered with friends and family to celebrate.
Compared to last year’s Dasara, which saw Rs 257.31 crore worth of liquor sold, this year marked a notable increase of Rs 33.93 crore. Residents of the joint district celebrated the festival with enthusiasm, particularly those returning to their hometowns for the holiday, significantly boosting liquor sales.
Rangareddy district led the way in alcohol sales. Last year, the district recorded Rs 130.78 crore in sales, but this year, the figure jumped to Rs 147.27 crore, an increase of Rs 16.49 crore. The highest sales within the district came from the Serilingampally Excise Division, where Rs 32.81 crore worth of liquor was sold. Sarurnagar, Hayatnagar, Ibrahimpatnam, Maheswaram, Amanagal, and Shadnagar Excise divisions collectively accounted for Rs 75.83 crore, while Shamshabad, Serilingampally, and Chevella Excise divisions contributed Rs 71.44 crore.
In Vikarabad district, alcohol sales also saw a notable increase, rising from Rs 16.71 crore last year to Rs 20.74 crore this year, a growth of Rs 4.03 crore.
Beer emerged as the drink of choice during this year’s Dussehra festivities. While 2,78,133 cases of Indian made liquor (IML) were sold, beer sales surged, with 4,79,673 cases sold. The increased demand for beer, especially in the warm weather, contributed to the record-breaking revenue figures.
This surge in sales has proven to be a windfall for the Excise Department, as festival-goers continue to indulge during Dasara celebrations.
