Challa Ramachandra Reddy, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in-charge for Punganur, popularly known as Challa Babu, along with several party leaders, voluntarily surrendered to the police in Punganur on Monday.
Challa Babu had been tagged as the prime accused (A 1) in the Punganur violence incident that occurred during TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu’s visit to Chittoor district on August 4. After the incident, Challa Babu remained in hiding until he filed a petition with the Andhra Pradesh High Court on August 22, seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the violence that transpired in Punganur.
Among the seven cases registered by the Punganur police under various sections, the High Court granted conditional bail to Challa Babu in four cases but did not grant bail in the remaining three. Consequently, Challa Babu decided to surrender himself to the police, a move witnessed by DSP Sudhakar Reddy.
Following his surrender, Challa Babu was subsequently remanded into judicial custody. Notably, TDP politburo member Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, along with party leaders Sugunamma, Narasimha Yadav, and others, arrived at the Punganur police station to show their support and solidarity with Challa Babu.
