In a significant medical achievement, a 60-year-old man underwent a successful operation for a recurrent Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumour, providing a new lease of life. The medical intervention was carried out by a skilled team of doctors at the American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Vijayawada. The procedure involved a challenging Wide Local Excision of sarcoma with Flap Reconstruction, commonly referred to as Limb Salvage Surgery.
The patient initially presented with an ulceroproliferative mass in the left shoulder and lower neck region. This mass had been previously operated on in 2015, and a diagnosis of Recurrent Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumour was established.
The comprehensive surgical procedure was performed by the proficient surgical team led by Dr. Vijay Koduru and Dr. Sreekanth K at AOI. The anaesthesia team, comprising Dr Uma and Dr Mrudula, played a crucial role in ensuring the success and smooth execution of the surgical intervention.
Dr Vijay Koduru, Surgical Oncologist at AOI, remarked, “Conducting limb salvage surgery for a recurrent malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour demanded meticulous planning and precision. Our multidisciplinary team worked cohesively to execute the wide local excision of the sarcoma, followed by intricate flap reconstruction, to achieve optimal functional restoration and oncological outcomes.”
Mahendra Reddy, RCOO of AOI, expressed, “The successful completion of this complex surgery underscores AOI’s commitment to delivering advanced medical care and expertise in addressing challenging cases. The dedication of our team and the collaborative efforts of our surgical and anaesthesia teams exemplify our pursuit of excellence in patient care.”
