Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Dr. P Sampath Kumar has issued a strong appeal to citizens to refrain from lighting Bhogi bonfires on tar roads. In a press release on Friday, the Commissioner urged the public to celebrate the festival responsibly by choosing open grounds or vacant spaces for their bonfires, instead of constructing them on roads.
Dr. Sampath Kumar explained that burning bonfires on tar roads causes the tar to melt, which in turn leads to the formation of potholes and undermines the city’s ongoing beautification efforts. The damage to the roads results in significant financial losses for GVMC, which uses public funds to construct and maintain these roads for the convenience of residents. He emphasised that such actions not only lead to infrastructure damage but also cause considerable inconvenience to commuters.
The Commissioner also warned of the risks associated with bonfires on roads, including the increased potential for accidents. He highlighted that such activities pose a serious threat to public safety and urged people to exercise caution during the festival.
In addition to his request to citizens, Dr. Sampath Kumar called upon public representatives, leaders of various associations, resident welfare societies, and NGOs to play an active role in educating people about the importance of preserving public infrastructure. He urged these groups to ensure that Bhogi bonfires are not lit on tar roads, in parks, or any other inappropriate locations
