At the heart of Andhra Pradesh’s vision for urban transformation lies Vijayawada, one of the State’s most prominent cities. For G Lakshmisha, the NTR District Collector, this vision is not just about turning the city into a modern metropolis, but shaping it into a model for the entire State. As he embarks on this journey, he acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead in driving the district’s development.
One of the foremost issues Lakshmisha is tackling is the threat of recurring floods from the Budameru River. A priority is to address the encroachment along the flood course, which has long posed a risk to both the environment and the lives of local residents. Relocation of the affected families is a sensitive issue, as it is crucial to ensure that people’s livelihoods are not disrupted in the process.
The Collector, at a recent interaction with journalists, pointed to the persistent health challenges in parts of the West NTR district, particularly concerning kidney diseases. While access to safe drinking water is essential, Lakshmisha highlights that the root causes of ill health in these areas extend beyond just water, demanding a more comprehensive approach to public health.
In line with the central government’s initiatives, Lakshmisha is spearheading efforts to promote solar energy across the district. Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, residents are being encouraged to install rooftop solar systems. Initially, the target for the NTR district was 20,000 installations. However, the collector has set his sights higher, aiming for a tenfold increase with a target of 2 lakh solar installations. He believes this will not only help the district reduce its energy consumption but also boost awareness about sustainable energy.
Recreation facilities have long been in short supply, and Lakshmisha is keen to address this gap. He envisions the development of riverfronts such as Durga Ghat, Bhavani Ghat, Punnami Ghat, and the Ferry as spaces that could transform the local atmosphere, providing much-needed parks and gardens for the public. These developments are part of his broader strategy to enhance the quality of life for the district’s residents.
Another priority is the creation of a sustainable revenue model to support the upkeep of the Statue of Social Justice, a monumental project dedicated to Dr BR Ambedkar. Lakshmisha is focused on creating a comprehensive plan that will ensure the statue not only stands as a symbol of justice but also contributes to the district’s economy.
Economic disparity between urban and rural areas remains a critical concern for the collector. Lakshmisha stresses that tailored solutions are needed to bridge the gap, with a focus on improving infrastructure, creating employment opportunities, and supporting local industries, especially in agriculture and small-scale enterprises. Ensuring access to clean water and sanitation across both urban and rural communities will also be a priority, as these basic services are fundamental to both health and socio-economic development.
Skill development, another cornerstone of Lakshmisha’s vision, is vital to the district’s long-term economic prosperity. He is committed to enhancing the skill sets of both urban and rural populations, believing that a well-trained workforce is essential to driving sustainable growth.
With Vijayawada facing significant challenges related to traffic management, Lakshmisha is focused on addressing congestion, accidents, and air pollution. A multi-pronged approach is required, he says, which includes expanding road networks, improving public transport systems, and developing pedestrian-friendly spaces to enhance the quality of life for all residents.
As Lakshmisha sets his sights on these ambitious goals, he remains resolute in his commitment to addressing the district’s challenges, believing that with careful planning and community involvement, the NTR district can achieve a brighter, more prosperous future for all its residents.
